Thank you for all that you have seen
sometimes what is in front of you and sometimes beyond
like the time you witnessed a funeral procession at 4am
you and I couldn’t sleep, remember?
after all it was my first encounter with death
or the time I challenged the sun and you stared at it for hours at end
you burned while I proved my point that I wasn’t weak
I don’t remember the first time I looked into my mother’s eye
but you do, of course you do
and now you look into my son’s eyes
when he looks at me
a mirror, a reflection
you shed tears for me even when my heart refuses to accept the love
you are brave, you let me be vulnerable
do you remember the perfect moment
the moon was the only light
the water mesmerised you, us
the flow, the serenity, the magic
it lulled us into a sense of security
you
witnessed the first time I took something that wasn’t mine
and the first time they took something that wasn’t theirs
from me
people tell me you lit up like fire
in anger, in love, in desire, in passion
but you are full of judgement, they say
I don’t believe them
you are intense
but never judging
you have seen too much
some things you were not meant to see
other things you were forced to see
I smile as I remember
the first time you stumbled upon a word you didn’t know
you paced back and forth with frustration
but we read, you and I
kept on reading in the dimmest light
imagining worlds, getting lost in them for hours
always hungry for more words
for more knowledge
or the times you read a text that was heart breaking
the screen blurred
because it wasn’t meant to
hurt this much, the blame, the shame
so I wrote away the pain
and you watched the words form on the screen
sometimes with anger
sometimes with sadness
sometimes with longing
so
you are my witness
to a life lived
so
thank you for all that you have seen
are
and will.
your article is so convincing that I never stop myself to say something about it.
